Alex Fischer's approach to art-making is that of syncretism; a melding of various schools of thought. He works with mixed media and emerging technologies to provide a complex aesthetic. By emphasizing the synthesis inherent in mixed media, and representing a variety of iconographies and techniques, each piece generates a variety of ways in which to look at particular subjects. Namely the use of post-structuralism and post-modernism in the visual arts. Fischer subdues the implicit meanings of his compositions in favor of iconological interpretations. He employs art as a physical experience in order to elicit subjectivity and create situations where people reflect upon memory and past experience.
His current body of work is developed around the relationship between contemporary art and the context of production within a university visual arts program. Fischer parallels the production of artwork as a type of syncretism by setting up specific dialogues between the artistic trends of his contemporaries. Specifically drawing on the work of colleagues and professional influences communicates the inherent relationships and tautological influence of art institutions. Fischer aestheticizes this collective immersion to establish a delicate medley of information and simulation.
